Project Two - Stefan Sagmeister
Subject:
Stefan Sagmeister
Bio:
Sagmeister studied graphic design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
1991, he moved to Hong Kong to work the Leo Burnett's Hong Kong Design Group.
1993, he returned to New York to work Tibor Kalman's M&Co design firm and went on to start Sagmeister, Inc.
His design work is at once timeless and of the moment, and his painstaking attention to the smallest details creates work that offers something new every time you look at it.
While a sense of humor invariably surfaces in his designs, Sagmeister is nonetheless very serious about his work; his intimate approach and sincere thoughtfulness elevate his design. A genuine maverick, Sagmeister achieved notoriety in the 1990s as the designer who self-harmed in the name of craft: He created a poster advertising a speaking engagement by carving the salient details onto his torso (see photo below).

Homework 6
1. Value is relative because its what shows up visually. It is essentially how light or dark an item appears alongside of other items or objects.
2. High contrast can allow a designer to play off of comparisons, capture attention or highlight areas of detail.
3. Darker values are often seen as having depth or being in the background where as the brighter something is, it can relate that the object is closer or draw more attention, creating an illusion of space even if it is the same size or on the same plane.
4. There is:
Perspective
Overlap
Size Variation
Definition
5. a visual plane
6. one point perspective has just that, one point where all the lines converge to the vanishing point. Two point perspective has two vanishing points
7. Rectilinear because the values are basically what the perspective of the human eye, what it sees naturally.
8. In composition it is appropriate to use depth in showing different sizes and distances. It should be avoided when applying or using high contrast.

Exercise 2
Homework 2 Q&A
1. Mistakes are great lessons in trouble shooting. Hopefully when a mistake is made you do learn the way not to approach or execute for a second time and gain the insight of why it was incorrect.
2. Design is arrangement of communication, hopefully intelligent that conveys the proper purpose or idea. It is important to visual communication because it can limit subjectivity and help focus meaning.
3. research. then sketching ideas
4. intelligent arrangement for a desired outcome.
5. Composition defines the perspective of the designer and contributes to the message or the overall perception of the viewer.
6. The design looses a natural element and unity can result in a mundane experience.
7. The composition could become chaotic or unruly, ideas and attention can be lost.
8. There are six ways: grouping, containment, repetition, proximity, continuity, and closure.
9. Using closure can help in making a composition more memorable.
10. Gestalt’s psychology incorporates these same principles. Usually, the idea is seen as a whole and viewers may not notice the small details/ principles that make up the design.
